I'm disgusted with the "lives" of all the Southside IB-ers.I realize this is a strong statement, but I do feel this way.
We came to the IB for one of two reasons:
- Our Parents wanted us to.
- It's the "best" school system.
The driving force behind all our studying.
The people that want the "best" for us.
The prideful souls that want us to "shine".
The source of the bruises on our body.
Sometimes I wonder if they have hearts. Sometimes I wonder if we can even call them parents, if not dictators. We live in "respect" of them, which basically translates to fear.
We are on a chopping block constantly.
We are bred to please them, to give them happiness.
We are abused when we don't achieve perfection.
Are we children or are we animals?
I can't tell anymore.
Even if we deliver "perfection", most get a grunt of approval, no, acknowledgment.
We cast away all other necessities to "better" ourselves, and to receive their approval.
We give up our weekends, our friends, hell, we even give up our souls sometimes to study our lives away.
All for what?
So they don't hit us?
So they don't yell at us?
So they finally acknowledge us for the human beings we are?
Is this healthy?
Can this be considered a life?
We give up so much.
We give up sleep.
We give up looks.
We give up comfort.
We give up friends.
We give up freedom.
We give up so much, just to appease our parents.
Do we even exist outside of these "lives"?
I have come to realize these things the past few days after sitting back and watching us.
I suppose we are ants.
We work, work, work.
I feel bad for ourselves.
All of this just to be able to check the box on our college applications that reads

Hm. But our parents are the ones who raised us, groomed us to be what we are. Don't we have an obligation to them to be the best we can be? And what about an obligation to ourselves? What's the point of all the grooming and all the opportunities that have been offered to us, if we don't grasp them. Sure, we're definitely just race horses bred to succeed, but now that we're actually on the championship track, why don't we race with all we can?
I understand, Jakob. I understand it very much. Do you still remember we talked about our moms in French while working on the chef propre thingy? My mom is taking some courses in Greenville tech, which is not quite serious because she is not trying to get a degree for anything but learn english by taking some courses. She wants all hundreds on everything single test and homework in her class. And once she made a 98, she was sad for like 3 days. You see what I mean? That's insane. We all have our own goals in our lives. And United States is a more free country than China, I dont know about Germany tho. But I have a quite hard-working spirit. But like we all get sad while receiving bad grades, right? It is tres annoying when they were like...why it is so bad? what's wrong with you? Because we are already very sad about ourselves and trying to work harder. But they are just saying something that won't give us any positive affects. I think I understand you quite much, Jakob. :)
See here is the thing Paavan. We are obligated to be respectful, but in the end we are our own being. They have put us on the track to success, but the horse that does nothing but run will be tired. What I'm trying to say is that we need other things in our lives as well, other than studying. We don't need parents to keep kicking us while we are down. As Eileen put it so well, we know we didn't achieve perfection, and we are upset. You can't however tell me that if they keep on giving us negativity, that we won't become bitter. It might make us stronger, but in the end we will do the same exact things to our kids. Do you want to do the same things to your kids that some of our parents do to us? I sure as hell don't. I will motivate my kids to do their best, and if that best is an 85 on every test then hell, so be it. I just think wanting perfection from something as imperfect as humans is wrong Paavan. That's all.
Jakob! (Please don't think I'm a stalker, I saw the link on Oryza's blog :])
But I agree with this, completely. And I think that it doesn't have to just be related to school. We don't have to perfect in any aspect of our life, and people, regardless of who they are or how we're related to them, shouldn't expect it of us.
Nice blog post. :]
I agree, Jakob. And I completely understand. We're still our own people, and while appeasing our parents and hearing "I'm proud of you!" is great, we should also know what's best for ourselves, too.
But for some, being like those ants is really what they wanted. Would you ever believe that I, not my parents, picked this journey instead of anything else so I could check that box off? :P
You know the funny thing is, Jakob, that I'm sort of the "parent" figure in this situation, while my parents are more representative of the "child". My parents tell me they only want my best and not perfection, while I sit there like a pathetic idiot beating myself up with a couple of textbooks.
It's pretty strange, but I have this really bad tendency to put pressure on myself for no good reason. You're right, though. It really isn't a life. Each day passes by in a blur from thoughts of school and grades.
"We give up so much, just to appease our parents."
-Perhaps it's because I'm trying to appease myself.
Good post, by the way. :) Hope everything's going well in your life.
(The word verification for this comment was "missi" XD Hahaha. Random)
I agree with Angela.

Quoted for truth.
